Daily Reading for February 23 KEEP AN OPEN MIND One of my favorite lines in the Nar-Anon Blue Booklet is “keep an open mind… you will soon feel very much a part of the group.” When I first came to Nar-Anon, I had strong opinions on what the addict in my life should and should not be doing. I also firmly believed that I could make him stop using. I was convinced that if I could say that one word or convey that one thought, the addict would see how much his using was hurting our family, himself and me.Fortunately, I kept an open mind and continued attending meetings. By listening and sharing in meetings, I soon discovered that my obsession with the addict was keeping me from my recovery and growth. I was so focused on the addict that I was neglecting me.An open mind enabled me to change my focus. I learned about the disease of addiction and the tools of the program. This knowledge helped me to determine what my responsibility is. Most importantly, I learned what I can change, with the help of a Higher Power, and what I cannot. Thought for Today: Today, I stay focused on my recovery by going to meetings. I try to live every day in a manner that will make a difference. I pray with an open mind for guidance, wisdom, and the ability to release the addict with love. Today, I know that it is the best thing I can do. “Your mind is like a parachute. It only works if it is open.” ~Anthony J. D’Angelo
